HOW WE CAN HELP

Diagnosing the stove problem

A flame that will not remain alight is different from a burner that never ignites. Many modern gas hobs incorporate flame-supervision systems intended to interrupt gas flow if a flame is lost. A weak flame, an out-of-position burner component or a fault in the sensing and valve arrangement can produce similar symptoms; the exact cause depends on the model.

The flame burns only while the knob is held

If the fire disappears at the instant a control is released, note whether that occurs on one ring or all rings. Some appliances require a normal manufacturer-specified ignition hold period, but a burner that repeatedly fails after ordinary operation needs proper assessment. Do not wedge or tie the control in the open position: doing so defeats the safety function and creates an unacceptably dangerous condition.

Flame contact with the sensing component

Flame-supervision devices depend on the burner operating as designed. A flame that does not reach the appropriate sensor, or a sensor and associated circuit that fail to register combustion, may cause shutoff. We distinguish flame quality from the control response rather than assuming that every shutdown needs a new thermocouple. Only suitable practitioners should test or replace components that form part of gas safety.

One burner fails after cleaning

The history matters if the problem began immediately after washing removable burner parts. On some models a cap or crown that is not correctly seated can alter ignition or flame shape. The correct component arrangement is model-specific. If normal visible placement does not resolve the fault, stop attempting repeated ignition and arrange an assessment; do not remove the hob or access the gas manifold.

Several burners cut out or become weak

A fault affecting multiple rings points to different possibilities than a single burner failure. An issue with the appliance supply, regulator suitability or more than one control component may need investigation. We ask whether the oven, water heater or other gas equipment also changed behaviour. These observations can guide an authorised technician without encouraging you to adjust the regulator or pipework yourself.

An unstable flame with unusual colour or noise

Flames lifting away from ports, making an unusual roaring sound or producing soot cannot be treated as a harmless nuisance. Burner design and gas type influence normal appearance. If combustion is visibly abnormal, discontinue use and obtain qualified assessment. A photograph can describe what occurred but cannot establish that gas pressures and combustion products are safe.

Repairability depends on the exact hob

A replaceable sensor, burner head and integral valve do not have the same repair process or cost. Availability also varies by age and manufacturer. Share the maker, model and whether the hob is built in or freestanding. We can discuss the assessment and whether appropriate parts are likely to be available before a repair recommendation is made.

What to send with your repair enquiry

Include the affected burner position, whether the flame appears before shutdown, and whether the issue is intermittent. Let us know if the cooker was recently moved, cleaned or installed. If you smell unburned gas or cannot reliably shut off the appliance, do not use the booking form as an emergency response; move to safety and seek appropriate immediate assistance.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Answers before you book

Can I keep the knob pressed down to cook?

No. Do not defeat a control that is shutting the gas off unexpectedly.

Does this always mean the thermocouple is broken?

No. The flame pattern, sensing arrangement and safety valve may all need model-specific testing.

Should I replace the gas regulator first?

No. Regulator selection and gas-supply work require appropriate technical assessment.
