UNDERSTANDING THE FAULT

The correct repair starts with the fault

A gas cooker may combine hob burners, an oven thermostat, flame-safety controls and electrical ignition. The fault can be limited to one part of the cooker or affect everything. We first establish whether the unit is fully gas, mixed fuel or a built-in set, then examine the exact symptoms without assuming a single gas-supply cause.

Oven burner fails while the top hob still works

A working cooktop does not guarantee that an oven burner, ignition device or safety supervision is operating correctly. Tell us whether the oven ever lights, whether it holds a flame and what happens when the temperature knob is adjusted. We need the model because different ovens use different controls.

A cooker that cooks unevenly

Uneven browning might reflect burner performance, thermostat regulation, oven seals or airflow depending on the design. This is not automatically a clogged jet. Note which shelf positions are affected, whether the problem developed suddenly and whether oven temperatures seem to overshoot or drop.

A top burner goes out at low heat

Some burners have specific minimum operating ranges. When a ring extinguishes as it is reduced, the burner or flame-supervision arrangement needs assessment for that make and model. Do not defeat the safety device or alter an injector to retain a flame at an unsuitable setting.

Igniter clicking after recent cleaning

Liquid around igniter controls can affect some electric ignition systems. The distinction between normal spark operation, wet controls and a damaged module is important. Tell us whether clicking happens only when a knob is pressed or continues with controls released. Never open the gas manifold to reach a switch.

Freestanding cooker relocation

A cooker moved during kitchen work needs attention to its authorised gas connection, stability and installation clearances. If symptoms began after the appliance was pulled forward, stop using it if connections may have been disturbed. A registered practitioner should assess gas fittings rather than a homeowner attempting to reconnect a hose.

Gas supply type and part matching

The approved appliance specification determines gas type, pressure requirements and replacement components. A converted cooker cannot simply be treated as identical to the original configuration. We ask for the data plate and service history before discussing injectors, valves or other gas-control parts.

Abnormal flames and unsafe operation

A new smell of gas, heavy soot or persistent irregular flames calls for immediate caution. Turn away from ordinary use and seek appropriate urgent help; do not keep cooking to see whether the fault clears. A professional diagnosis needs to consider ventilation and combustion along with the affected components.

Book a Centurion cooker assessment

State whether the fault affects the hob, oven or both, and give the brand, model and exact suburb. Mention if it is a freestanding appliance or fitted beneath a worktop. We confirm address coverage and availability before any visit is agreed.

YOUR QUESTIONS

Questions about this repair

Why does the hob work while the gas oven fails?

The hob and oven often have separate burners, controls and ignition arrangements.

Do all gas ovens use the same thermostat?

No. Parts and control systems differ by manufacturer and model.

Can I reconnect a moved gas cooker myself?

Gas connections must be assessed or altered by an appropriately authorised person.
