UNDERSTANDING THE FAULT

Ignition, combustion and controls

Fireplaces in open-plan living areas are frequently operated through wall switches, handsets or concealed controls. We need to know how yours is started and whether the main burner, pilot or electronic control fails. The distinction changes what an inspection must cover.

Remote ignition without a main flame

If a handset indicates operation but the burner stays dark, the fault may occur before, during or after ignition. We ask if you hear a spark or see a pilot flame, and whether the appliance reports a status indication. Remote response alone does not establish that the gas valve or control box has failed.

Fire goes out after heating the room

Shutdown after sustained use may reflect an operating limit, flame-sensing issue or another model-specific safety response. Tell us whether it restarts immediately or only after cooling. We recommend against repeatedly resetting a fire or interfering with any temperature or flame-proving device.

Wall-mounted versus inset fires

A wall-mounted unit can have different heat clearances and service access from a fire set within masonry. Surround materials, nearby cabinetry and the approved flue arrangement affect how inspection is planned. Please send a wider photograph showing the appliance in the room, not a cropped control-panel image alone.

Controlling unwanted noise or delayed ignition

Popping, delayed light-up or an unusual ignition sound should not be dismissed as normal. There may be a problem with the burner, ignition sequence or other components. Stop operating an appliance that lights abnormally and arrange a proper assessment rather than trying to change the burner settings.

Understanding flame colours on decorative fires

Manufacturers design some decorative burners to produce a visible yellow flame effect. That does not mean that any yellow, sooty or unstable flame is acceptable. The safe appearance depends on the exact model, firebed and air/exhaust system. We evaluate deviation from its intended operation instead of relying on a generic colour rule.

Estate access and appliance information

Centurion has many security-controlled complexes and estates. Let us know whether the site requires visitor permission and whether the fireplace is in a ground-floor lounge or an upper-level space. These are appointment and access details, not evidence of a local office or fixed arrival time.

Servicing the appliance after seasonal storage

A seasonal gas fire may be switched off for months, sometimes with removable accessories nearby. Before use resumes, a suitable service can identify an ignition or safety concern, subject to the appliance’s requirements. We ask when it was last operated and whether any controls were changed during the off-season.

Clarifying repair and installation enquiries

We assess repair symptoms separately from any request to install or relocate a fireplace. Changes to fixed pipework, siting or flue systems require a practitioner with the applicable registration and appropriate documentation. We will not present an appliance fault repair as automatic authorisation for installation work.

YOUR QUESTIONS

Questions about this repair

Why does the fireplace need time to cool before restarting?

Some units respond to operating or safety conditions; the cause must be established from the model and symptoms.

Can I use a decorative fire without its specified logs?

Do not change manufacturer-specified media or configuration without authorised guidance.

What information helps for a remote-controlled fireplace?

The fire make/model, handset type, whether a pilot appears and any displayed fault are useful.
