THE FAULT MATTERS

A fireplace that will not remain alight

Gas fireplaces may rely on pilot assemblies, flame-sensing devices, electronic ignition and model-specific control systems. A pilot that lights but goes out when the control is released needs a different inspection from a remote-control receiver that does not respond. We assess the exact fireplace type and its operating sequence before recommending parts.

Pilot flames that do not remain lit

On gas fireplaces with pilot systems, a pilot that goes out when the control is released may involve the flame-detection system, pilot flame condition or associated controls. A suitable assessment must identify the actual cause. It is not acceptable to hold or defeat a safety control to force operation.

Glass, ventilation and combustion appearance

Discoloured viewing glass may result from deposits, but heavy black soot or persistent odours call for closer investigation of combustion and ventilation. Different fireplace models have different requirements for glass, logs, media and flues; these components should not be rearranged casually.

Pilot on, main burner off

A stable pilot does not mean the main burner controls are operating correctly. Depending on the system, the issue may be related to the main valve control, remote command or another interlock. We identify which part of the ignition sequence fails before discussing components.

The first lighting attempt after months of non-use

If the fireplace has been idle since the previous winter, tell us whether it makes an ignition sound, whether the pilot lights and whether it extinguishes immediately. Dust and control faults can have different effects. Sooting or unusual odours are reasons not to keep attempting ignition.

Why a seasonal fireplace can fail on first use

At the start of colder weather, an unused fireplace may reveal a pilot fault, unreliable ignition or a control that no longer responds. If the pilot never appears, we begin with a different sequence from a fireplace where a stable pilot exists but the main burner refuses to fire. Please tell us which stage fails.

Before further use, visible soot or an unusual change in the flame should be assessed as a combustion concern. Glass fronts, seals and the intended ventilation arrangement must remain in their approved condition. We do not suggest removing safety components to get the flame going.

Preparing for a repair assessment in Fourways

After seasonal non-use, describe the first ignition attempt and any soot marks. Do not keep trying to light a unit that smells unusual or burns irregularly.

GOOD TO KNOW

Questions customers ask

Is black soot around the glass normal?

No persistent sooting should be dismissed as cosmetic. Leave the appliance off and have the combustion and ventilation conditions assessed.

Can I operate a fireplace with a faulty safety switch?

No. An interlock or flame-failure system must not be defeated to keep the appliance alight.
