Yellow gas stove flames or soot: what needs checking
Noticeably yellow flames, black deposits on cookware or a sudden change in burner noise warrant attention. Stop using an appliance with suspected unsafe combustion and contact an appropriate qualified professional.

Diagnosing the stove problem
Flame appearance varies with appliance design and operating conditions, so colour alone cannot diagnose a defect. Nevertheless, soot, persistent flame instability or a sharp change in combustion are warning signs. We treat these as safety-related reports rather than promising that cleaning a burner or turning an air control will fix the problem.
Soot collects on the underside of pans
Black residue can indicate incomplete combustion, but the underlying reason should not be guessed from the stain. Relevant considerations include the appliance specification, burner assembly and correct gas-supply characteristics. An authorised practitioner may need to assess the burner and supply together. Continuing to cook while soot rapidly builds up is not an acceptable test.
A flame has changed since a cylinder exchange
A symptom appearing after a cylinder change does not automatically mean the cylinder is defective. The history may indicate supply-side or appliance-side concerns. Record when the change occurred and which appliances are affected. Do not alter pressure regulators or substitute fittings to try to strengthen the flame; LPG supply components require correctly specified, competent handling.
Uneven flame heights around one burner
Flame distribution can be affected by burner geometry and the fit of approved removable parts. We ask whether the problem happens on one ring, and whether the assembly was disturbed during cleaning. A visible obstruction does not authorise drilling burner ports, modifying injectors or adjusting gas jets. Assessment must follow the maker’s requirements.
Yellow flames versus normal brief changes
A brief colour change from contamination near a flame is not the same as persistent sooting or poor performance. Likewise, some designed flames differ from a textbook image. To avoid making an unsafe assumption, tell us the duration, ring affected and whether cookware or surrounding surfaces are darkening. A practitioner can then decide what measurements and inspection are needed.
Ventilation and indoor air quality
Combustion appliances require appropriate air and ventilation conditions for their model and installation. Unexplained headaches, nausea, unusual exhaust smells or sooty deposits are not reasons to test the appliance longer. Stop use, get into fresh air and seek urgent assistance if illness or unsafe exhaust exposure is suspected.
Testing and repair decisions
An assessment may involve checking that the appliance, fuel and installation conform to the manufacturer’s approval and applicable gas-work rules. The remedy could involve an approved replacement part or another system correction. We will not promise that a flame can be made safe by visual adjustment alone or that all yellow flames have one universal cause.
How to report the fault
Tell us the stove make and model, whether soot is on pans or near the appliance, when the change began and whether multiple burners are affected. If there is a gas odour or suspected combustion hazard, leave the area safely and use emergency channels instead of waiting for a routine web-form response.
Answers before you book
Is every yellow flame dangerous?
Flame appearance alone is not a complete test, but persistent soot or abnormal burning warrants qualified assessment.
Should I adjust the air shutter myself?
No. Do not alter burner air or gas-metering settings on a suspect appliance.
Can this affect people in the kitchen?
Faulty combustion or poor ventilation can create harmful exposure; discontinue use when concerned.
