UNDERSTANDING THE FAULT

The correct repair starts with the fault

Some cooktops fire multiple spark electrodes when one knob is pressed. That can be normal. Continuous clicking without a start command is a different symptom. The first distinction is whether the clicking stops after ignition and whether any gas-control knob has stopped operating correctly.

Clicks only while a burner is being lit

Many ignition systems are designed to produce sparks at several burners together. If clicking stops when the control is released and the burner operates normally, the behaviour may be intentional. Tell us the make and exact sequence before assuming a faulty spark module.

Clicking continues after every knob is released

Persistent unwanted sparking can occur with damaged or moisture-affected ignition switching, depending on the appliance. Stop using equipment that does not operate normally, especially if gas control is also uncertain. Electrical ignition faults should be assessed without pulling apart gas valves or manifolds.

Clicking began immediately after washing the hob

Cleaning water can sometimes affect switches or electrodes. We ask whether the appliance was recently flooded or cleaned heavily and which controls are involved. Do not use a hairdryer inside the unit, dismantle its switch rail or attempt electrical repairs around gas connections.

A spark is visible but the burner never lights

Sparking indicates only one part of the ignition process. Burner-cap position, electrode alignment or a gas-related fault can all be relevant. Tell us whether other rings ignite, whether a flame appears even briefly and whether unusual odour is present. Never keep releasing gas through repeated ignition attempts when an unsafe smell develops.

Only one burner clicks intermittently

A single erratic electrode or control may be local to one ring, while a shared module can produce symptoms across the appliance. The relationship between individual burners helps with diagnosis. We use model information and an actual assessment rather than sending universal replacement parts based on the sound alone.

Control knob position and ignition switches

On some hobs the ignition switch engages while the knob is pressed or turned. If the knob has become loose, stiff or unable to return properly, stop forcing it. The physical control and its switch must be checked for their designed operation; wedging a knob is unsafe.

When gas smell changes the urgency

Repeated clicking with a gas odour is not a normal appliance nuisance. Avoid flames and electrical switches, leave the area safely and seek suitable emergency gas help. Do not keep operating the igniter to see whether the gas catches.

What to send in your repair request

Give the manufacturer, model, which burners spark, whether any flame appears, and what happens with all controls off. Mention recent cleaning or power interruptions. We can then discuss the appropriate fault assessment and service location without promising a specific part from symptoms alone.

YOUR QUESTIONS

Questions about this repair

Is it normal for all hob igniters to spark together?

Yes, on some designs when one burner is selected.

Can moisture cause unwanted clicking?

It can affect ignition switches on some appliances, but the precise cause needs checking.

Should I keep trying to ignite when I smell gas?

No. Leave the danger area and obtain appropriate emergency assistance.
