UNDERSTANDING THE FAULT

The correct repair starts with the fault

A gas hob has several systems working together: gas control, burner assembly, ignition and, on many models, flame supervision. A clicking igniter is not the same problem as a burner that lights but extinguishes when you release its knob. Tell us what you see and the cooker model so we can discuss the right inspection rather than guessing at a replacement part.

A burner that sparks but never catches

Sparking confirms activity at part of the ignition system; it does not prove a satisfactory gas supply or correct ignition at the burner. The electrode can spark in the wrong location, the burner assembly can be mis-seated or the supply and valve may require assessment. We ask whether one ring or all rings are affected, and whether the problem began after cleaning or after a prolonged period without use.

Flame disappears when the knob is released

Many modern hobs use a flame-failure device so gas does not continue flowing when the flame is lost. If the burner extinguishes when the control is released, the correct inspection considers flame contact with the sensor, the burner condition and the relevant safety components. We never suggest holding a damaged valve open, wedging a control or bypassing a flame safeguard as a repair.

Why large and small burners behave differently

Wok rings and small simmer burners often have different burner bodies and operating ranges. A large ring may produce uneven flames or fail at minimum setting while smaller rings behave normally. We ask if the problem follows one burner at every setting or only at low output. That distinction can influence what is inspected and whether a manufacturer-approved part is needed.

Electric ignition and gas operation are separate

A gas hob with a mains-powered ignition circuit may still need electrical fault-finding when no electrode sparks. On some appliances every ring clicks together; that behaviour alone is not evidence of failure. A damaged switch, moisture or control circuit can cause persistent clicking. A safe assessment establishes whether the electrical issue is isolated from, or combined with, a gas-control concern.

Yellow flame, soot or unusual odour

Changes in combustion appearance, soot on cookware or a persistent smell are reasons to stop using the affected appliance and arrange appropriate professional attention. Flame colour can be affected by several conditions and cannot be diagnosed reliably from a single photograph. If you suspect unburned gas, leave the area safely and obtain emergency gas assistance rather than submitting an ordinary appointment request.

Choosing a replacement part without guesswork

Two hobs can look almost identical while using different injectors, ignition modules and safety valves. We need the full make and model, the burner affected and the fault history before discussing replacement components. An unapproved generic valve or altered gas orifice is not an acceptable shortcut. If the exact part is unavailable, we explain the implications instead of assuming another component will fit.

Repair, servicing or replacement

A loose control knob, a worn igniter and significant heat damage do not call for the same decision. We consider the appliance age, parts supply, safety condition and repair cost before presenting an option. For extensive internal damage or obsolete safety components, replacement may be more responsible than repeated minor repairs. Your description and model label help us start that conversation accurately.

Arranging the stove assessment

Tell us whether the unit is a built-in hob, a freestanding cooker or a mixed gas-electric appliance. Identify which burners work, any unusual flame behaviour and whether a service history or model number is available. Please do not disconnect rigid or flexible gas connections to gain access. We will discuss the appropriate next step and coverage for your Gauteng address.

YOUR QUESTIONS

Questions about this repair

Will a new igniter always stop repeated clicking?

No. Wet or faulty switches, control modules and other ignition-circuit conditions can cause repeated sparking.

Can I continue using the other rings?

If there is an unexplained gas smell, abnormal combustion or a damaged gas control, stop using the appliance and obtain appropriate professional assessment.

Do you need the stove model number?

Yes, where available. It helps distinguish similar-looking parts and avoid unsuitable replacements.
