Gas water heater not delivering hot water? Gauteng repair assessment
If your gas water heater has stopped igniting, cuts out mid-shower or only runs at certain taps, we help you describe the fault and arrange an appropriate assessment.

What changes when hot water fails
An instantaneous gas water heater normally needs adequate water flow, a working ignition sequence and safe combustion before it can deliver heat. Water that flows strongly but remains cold points to a different set of checks from a hot tap that barely delivers water. We begin by distinguishing these symptoms, the heater type and the model-specific error information.
No hot water but normal pressure
When the hot tap has a healthy flow yet never warms, we ask whether the heater display activates, whether a spark or fan can be heard and whether the fault affects every outlet. Some heaters depend on electrical supply or battery-powered ignition; others have different operating sequences. Those observations narrow the inspection without treating the problem as proof that a gas cylinder is empty.
Hot water becomes cold during a shower
A heater that starts normally and shuts off during sustained demand needs different checks from one that never starts. Water demand, over-temperature protection, flame sensing and model-specific faults may be relevant. Tell us how long the heater runs, whether an error appears and if the failure follows a second tap opening. Repeated restarts are not a substitute for resolving a safety-related shutdown.
One tap works but another does not
Instantaneous heaters generally have a minimum activation flow. A restrictive shower head, mixer behaviour or a water-side problem can change the demand that the heater detects. We ask you to compare the symptoms—not to modify the gas settings. If the heater operates at the kitchen sink but not at a particular shower, that information can be more useful than a description of the water as simply lukewarm.
The display reports a fault code
Fault codes differ across heater models and may identify a system to investigate rather than one component that must be replaced. Please record the exact characters as they appear, the make and model, and what was happening before the code displayed. We can then decide whether ignition, combustion, flow or electrical controls are the sensible starting points. Repeatedly clearing a protection fault is not a repair.
Outdoor and enclosed water heaters
The mounting position and combustion arrangement matter. An external heater exposed to weather, a naturally ventilated appliance and a room-sealed unit may have different installation requirements. We ask for a wide photo of the installation if it can be taken without opening a cover. A new enclosure, altered vent or blocked terminal needs appropriately registered attention; do not improvise protection by sealing ventilation openings.
What a leaking heater may mean
A drip from a water connection is not automatically the same as a heat-exchanger leak, and water running onto electrical components changes the urgency of the problem. Turn off use of an obviously leaking or damaged heater and arrange competent inspection. We need to know whether water appears at a visible fitting, beneath the casing or only when hot water is drawn. Avoid removing panels to trace the leak.
When replacement is more practical
If the appliance is undersized for current demand, has repeated safety cut-outs, suffers significant internal damage or depends on unobtainable safety components, replacing it can be preferable to another repair. That decision must account for the existing gas and flue installation, not simply the wall space available. Work involving changes to the gas system must be handled within the relevant registered practitioner scope.
Information to include in your enquiry
Tell us the heater brand, approximate age if known, what outlets are affected and whether the fault is constant or intermittent. Note the property suburb and whether access requires an estate or building manager. Do not send photographs requiring removal of gas pipework or appliance covers. We can discuss inspection and likely next steps once we know the fault pattern.
Questions about this repair
Why does the shower go cold when another tap opens?
Changing simultaneous demand can affect flow and temperature control, particularly on smaller instantaneous heaters.
Is low water flow always a broken gas heater?
No. The flow path and mixer may need assessment separately from ignition and combustion.
Can I keep resetting a heater after an error?
Do not repeatedly defeat or reset a recurring safety shutdown; arrange qualified assessment.
