HOW WE CAN HELP

What the water-heater symptoms mean

Water-flow problems often appear to be burner problems because an instantaneous heater may not fire without adequate demand. The distinction between one blocked outlet and poor flow throughout the property is essential. We consider that distribution pattern before concluding the gas appliance needs a new component.

Cold water is strong but hot water is weak

Ask whether this happens at every hot tap or just one. A common restriction affecting all hot outlets may be located near the heater or on the hot-water distribution route; a single weak shower can point to a more local issue. We do not diagnose internal heat-exchanger restrictions from the symptom alone.

Water is normal at the basin but poor at the shower

Mixer cartridges, shower heads and other downstream fittings can affect flow independently of the gas appliance. Tell us if the symptom began after bathroom work or the installation of water-saving hardware. The information may help determine whether a plumber or gas-water-heater practitioner is the appropriate first visit.

The heater starts only with two taps open

A unit that ignites at high flow but not at a low-flow outlet may have a demand-threshold issue, sensor fault or an installation mismatch. Its manufacturer-defined minimum activation flow matters. Do not tamper with internal switches or increase gas pressure as a substitute for proper assessment.

Heat becomes unstable when flow drops

Many instantaneous heaters modulate their heat to match water movement. Very low or fluctuating flow may cause the outlet temperature to swing or heating to shut down. An apparent temperature problem can therefore begin with water conditions. Describe the sequence: is the water weak first, or does it weaken after heating starts?

Scale and sediment are possible, not proven

Water quality and time in service may contribute to restrictions, depending on heater design. These possibilities need inspection rather than immediate chemical treatment. Pouring descaler into a connected gas appliance, removing fittings or opening the heat exchanger without approved procedures risks damage and an unsafe condition.

A recent plumbing or water-supply change

Municipal supply interruptions, valve work and alterations to domestic plumbing can coincide with symptoms at the heater. Ask whether neighbours or other outlets are affected and whether water-pressure changes were noticed. A competent assessment should separate incoming supply, plumbing and appliance causes.

What to tell us before booking

Give the model, indoor/outdoor position and a clear list of affected outlets. Mention any recent plumbing work, whether the heater displays a fault code and whether it ignites when flow is stronger. We can discuss an appropriate inspection without promising that replacing a gas part will restore water pressure.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Answers before you book

Will a bigger gas cylinder fix low hot-water pressure?

No. Cylinder capacity does not directly repair a water-flow restriction.

Could a shower mixer be the cause?

Yes. An outlet-specific fault should be distinguished from a whole-house heater problem.

Can I descale the heater myself?

Follow manufacturer and practitioner guidance; do not dismantle or chemically treat gas equipment without appropriate competence.
