UNDERSTANDING THE FAULT

The correct repair starts with the fault

A kitchen gas hob is more than a row of burner knobs. An ignition electrode, burner body and sometimes a flame-supervision device all affect the start-up and safe operation of each ring. We ask whether you have a standalone gas hob or combined cooker, which part is faulty and whether the issue followed cleaning, renovation or long disuse.

Cooker ignites on one side only

If two rings work while another never catches, the fault may be local to that burner or its controls. We ask whether the affected ring sparks, whether the burner body is seated correctly and whether the fault occurs at every knob position. One non-working ring is different from a whole-hob supply problem; replacing the general gas regulator without assessment may be unnecessary and unsafe.

Flame disappears after lighting

A flame safeguard may stop fuel flow when the expected flame is not confirmed. The cause can involve burner condition, flame contact or approved components specific to the model. Do not tape or hold a knob in an abnormal position to keep the flame burning. We arrange the fault to be considered within the appropriate gas-appliance repair scope.

Persistent clicking after cleaning

Some hobs generate a spark at all burners while the ignition button or knob is engaged. Clicking that continues after release is another matter, potentially involving switches, moisture or an ignition circuit. We ask when it started and whether the spark stops after the controls have been left unused. Electrical diagnosis must remain separate from any gas-system intervention.

Problems with combined oven and hob units

On a mixed-fuel cooker, the oven may be electric while the cooktop uses gas. Tell us whether the complaint relates to an oven temperature problem, failure of a gas oven burner or a hob ring. A worn door seal, electrical thermostat and gas flame sensor are different faults, so identifying the cooking arrangement prevents an inappropriate repair plan.

Abnormal flames and deposits

Yellow flames, new soot on pots or a smell of gas need prompt attention. Stop using the appliance if combustion looks abnormal or gas is suspected; seek appropriate emergency help where needed. A picture can describe the appearance but cannot establish the precise cause or gas tightness. We will not advise manipulating injectors or valves as a homeowner test.

Safe access to a built-in unit

Built-in hobs may be fixed under worktops with limited access near cabinets. If there has been a kitchen refurbishment, describe what changed around the appliance. A photograph of the entire installation can help identify the make and layout, but do not lift the hob or disconnect gas lines to expose hidden components.

Spare parts and sensible repair cost

Ignition electrodes, valves and burner rings vary widely, including between models of one brand. We need accurate identification before discussing parts. If approved safety components are unobtainable or the appliance is extensively damaged, replacement may be appropriate. We explain the difference between a straightforward part issue and a problem needing deeper gas-system assessment.

Arrange a Pretoria East enquiry

Tell us your suburb, the make and model, whether the unit uses a gas oven or electrical oven and the burner symptoms. Mention estate access if applicable. We will confirm service arrangements and available appointment times when we respond to your enquiry.

YOUR QUESTIONS

Questions about this repair

Is clicking on every ring normal?

It can be on some hobs; clicking that persists after the control is released needs assessment.

Can I replace a gas valve myself?

No. Work on gas controls must be handled by appropriately competent and registered practitioners.

What if I smell gas from a burner?

Stop using the appliance, avoid ignition sources and seek urgent appropriate gas assistance.
