UNDERSTANDING THE FAULT

The correct repair starts with the fault

In a compact or built-in kitchen, gas hobs combine ignition, burner components and gas-control parts in a confined space. A ring that refuses to light may be different from a burner that lights and goes out when released. We use the make and exact symptoms to guide an assessment rather than proposing the same replacement part for every failure.

Clicking after the control has been turned off

Repeated sparking with all knobs in their off positions can involve switches or electrical moisture on certain models. Some systems also spark more than one ring during ordinary operation. Tell us whether clicking continues with every control released and whether the issue began after cleaning; avoid opening the electrical ignition components yourself.

The front burner lights but the rear burner does not

When only one ring is affected, the problem may be local to its cap, electrode, burner body or control rather than the entire gas supply. We ask which ring works, whether any spark can be seen and how the flame behaves if it lights. This comparison is useful before buying a replacement igniter.

A flame that goes out when the knob is released

On a flame-supervised hob the burner must satisfy the system intended to prevent uncontrolled gas release. Holding or wedging the knob open is unsafe. The burner’s flame condition and applicable protection components require appropriate assessment; fitting an arbitrary thermocouple because it looks similar is not sound practice.

Problems after the hob was cleaned

Burner caps or cooking grates may not have been put back in their intended position, and ignition switches can be affected by moisture. If the symptoms appeared after a deep clean, mention that history. We do not advise customers to dismantle burner jets, safety controls or gas pipe connections to investigate.

Stiff controls on a heavily used cooking surface

A tight knob can originate from a worn control or a damaged valve mechanism. Continued force can break a component or leave uncertainty about whether the gas is fully off. Stop using an unsafe control, describe the resistance and let a competent person determine whether approved parts are available.

Soot marks on cookware and splashback

Black soot, recurring uneven yellow flames or unexplained odours can indicate a combustion problem. Stop using the affected burner and arrange an appropriate safety assessment. Simply cleaning the cookware does not correct the cause, and changing injector sizes without manufacturer guidance is unsafe.

Fitted kitchen access

A built-in unit may be surrounded by drawers or an oven. Please describe the layout and whether the hob can be safely reached without moving fixed fittings. We plan around manufacturer-required access and do not assume appliance removal is acceptable without first assessing gas and electrical connections.

Booking an Eastgate appointment

State your street, stove make, whether it is LPG or another approved arrangement and which ring is affected. If the property uses access control, mention it when arranging attendance. We confirm the location and service availability after receiving your enquiry.

YOUR QUESTIONS

Questions about this repair

Why do all the burners click when I select one?

On some designs, simultaneous sparking is normal; persistent sparking or ignition failure warrants assessment.

Can I keep using a stove with a stiff knob?

Do not force or continue using a control that may no longer shut off correctly.

Will replacing the spark plug fix every ignition fault?

No. Switches, positioning and other model-specific causes must be considered.
