Solar versus gas water heating: faults and practical choices
Solar and gas water heating operate differently. We help customers understand when a cold-water problem belongs to the gas heater, the solar circuit or the plumbing connecting them.

Identify the heating system first
A household can have a solar thermal collector, a storage cylinder, an instantaneous LPG water heater or a combination. These are not interchangeable technologies. Before arranging a gas appliance assessment, identify which equipment actually heats the water and whether the gas unit provides backup heating. We discuss gas equipment only within the appropriate service scope; solar electrical and roof work needs the relevant specialist.
Solar thermal collectors are not gas geysers
A solar thermal system transfers energy collected from sunlight into domestic hot water, generally through a collector and a suitable tank or heat exchanger. An instantaneous gas heater instead heats water as it passes through a burner-driven exchanger. If your rooftop solar circuit has a leak, the first contact may be a solar-hot-water or plumbing specialist rather than a gas repair technician.
When gas serves as backup heating
A hybrid arrangement can use gas when solar-heated water is insufficient. If a temperature fault appears only after cloudy weather, identify when the backup is meant to start and whether the gas heater actually receives the water flow it needs. Incorrect mixing arrangements can create symptoms that are wrongly blamed on a faulty gas burner.
No hot water on sunny days
Lack of heat despite sunshine may involve solar circulation, controls, storage or the distribution side. Sunlight alone does not confirm circulation or usable stored temperature. We can help distinguish what information to give a gas specialist where a gas backup heater is present; we do not present ordinary gas servicing as a repair for all roof-mounted solar faults.
Why water may be dangerously hot
A solar storage system can reach elevated temperatures and should use appropriate protection and temperature control. If water at the tap is scalding, stop exposing occupants to it and have the system assessed. Do not defeat tempering valves or alter pressure and relief components to change the delivered temperature.
Activation problems when preheated water enters a gas unit
Some gas water heaters require manufacturer-approved connection arrangements when receiving preheated water. Inappropriate incoming temperatures or insufficient activation flow can result in erratic operation. A qualified assessment must consider model compatibility and system design; attaching a solar feed directly to a standard heater is not automatically permissible.
Efficiency depends on how the property uses water
The useful comparison is not simply whether gas or solar is advertised as cheaper. Hot-water demand, roof conditions, available gas infrastructure, maintenance and seasonal performance all matter. An existing system that works properly should not be replaced on the basis of an online savings claim without examining actual needs and installation constraints.
Safety and professional responsibility
Roof work, electrical controls, pressurised vessels and LPG systems involve different qualifications. A gas certificate does not automatically authorise someone to repair solar electrics or plumbing, and the reverse is also true. For any gas modification or gas-system repair, use an appropriately authorised practitioner and request the necessary compliance documentation.
How to describe your hybrid hot-water fault
Tell us whether you have solar panels connected to a storage tank, a separate gas unit or a combined system. Note when water turns cold, whether it happens on sunny and cloudy days, and which appliance shows an error. We can then clarify if a gas-appliance assessment is appropriate or if a different specialist is required.
Questions about this repair
Does a roof-mounted solar geyser contain gas?
Not generally; solar thermal and LPG equipment use different heating processes.
Can I connect any solar tank to a gas heater?
No. The specific heater must be approved for the incoming water conditions and planned configuration.
Do you repair rooftop solar collectors?
We first identify which equipment is responsible for heating your water. Solar collector and electrical work require the appropriate specialist; ask us about the gas appliance portion.
