UNDERSTANDING THE FAULT

The correct repair starts with the fault

In a built-in kitchen, the hob may have separate spark controls and gas safety devices even when the knobs look identical. When only one ring fails, that gives different clues from a total loss of ignition. We ask whether the affected appliance is a standalone gas hob, a mixed-fuel cooker or an appliance with a gas oven.

The hob clicks continuously after wiping

Cleaning moisture around knobs and switches can sometimes interfere with an ignition circuit, but repeated clicking can also reflect an electrical component fault. We ask when the problem started, whether all burners spark together by design and whether the controls behave normally. Do not pull apart a gas-connected hob or use a damaged control simply because the spark has become irritating.

A small simmer ring will not remain lit

The smallest burner may need a different flame setting and sensor contact from the larger rings. When it ignites but goes out after the knob is released, flame supervision must be considered. We ask how long the flame remains and whether its shape is steady. Holding the control in an abnormal position to defeat the protection is never an acceptable fix.

A gas oven heats unevenly

In some combination cookers the oven is electric even when the hob is gas; in others the oven has a gas burner and flame-sensing system. Tell us which configuration you have before booking. An uneven cooking result may involve an oven thermostat or door seal, while loss of a gas oven flame requires additional safety-related assessment. These are not interchangeable repairs.

Stiff knobs and unusual control feel

A control that suddenly becomes very stiff, loose or fails to turn normally warrants inspection. Do not force the spindle with pliers or remove a gas valve from a built-in installation. We ask whether the issue developed gradually, followed a cleaning incident or occurs on more than one burner. The repair decision depends on the valve design and whether an approved component is available.

When flame appearance changes

Persistent yellow flames, soot on the underside of pots or unusual gas odours should not be ignored. Stop using the affected appliance and have its combustion and gas systems assessed by the appropriate qualified person. A photo might help describe the problem, but it does not prove the burner is safe or identify the exact cause without testing.

Working around stone counters and cabinetry

Many built-in hobs are surrounded by stone worktops or fitted cabinetry. The appliance model, cut-out and access route affect how a professional can inspect it safely. Please share a wide photograph without dismantling the hob. Damage caused by forcing out a cooktop or removing a gas connection to gain access can turn a straightforward fault into a larger job.

Part selection for imported cooking appliances

Premium cooker brands sometimes use model-specific ignition electrodes, switches and valves. We need the rating label and the burner affected before checking compatibility. A part that looks similar may not have the required temperature, pressure or safety specifications. If the manufacturer no longer supports an essential component, we will explain the repair limitations.

Booking a stove assessment in Atholl

Include your suburb, cooker make, which burner fails and whether the appliance has any gas smell or unusual flame. State whether the property has access or security arrangements. Do not attempt to repair the gas supply or open the appliance to provide photographs. We can then discuss the suitable next step for your request.

YOUR QUESTIONS

Questions about this repair

Can the spark work while the burner stays cold?

Yes. A spark alone does not confirm fuel delivery or correct ignition position.

Does a mixed-fuel cooker need gas or electrical attention?

It depends on whether the faulty part is the gas hob, the electrical oven or a shared control.

Can a valve be freed by forcing the knob?

No. Forcing a damaged gas control can be dangerous; stop using it and arrange assessment.
