UNDERSTANDING THE FAULT

What changes when hot water fails

An intermittent heater complaint is easiest to assess when we know what is different on the days it works. A water heater may need a minimum flow, stable electrical controls and correct combustion conditions. We ask for the exact point of failure rather than treating every cold shower as a damaged thermocouple.

Intermittent starts at the kitchen sink

If the heater operates only when a tap is fully open, the issue may involve minimum activation flow or a flow-detection problem on that particular model. We ask whether the cold-water side has also changed and whether an adjacent fixture behaves differently. Turning up a gas regulator is not an appropriate response to a water-demand symptom.

Hot water becomes unstable at a mixer shower

Temperature fluctuations at one mixer can reflect demand variation, heater control behaviour or other hydraulic conditions. Tell us if the burner actually goes out or if the temperature simply drops while flow continues. We use that distinction to choose an appropriate inspection path. Replacing a sensor without understanding the shower behaviour can miss the real fault.

A heater that briefly shows an error

Please photograph or write down the displayed code and model if safely visible. Some codes may be associated with ignition, water flow or protective shutdown, but their meanings are brand-specific. Clearing a fault before recording it can remove useful information. Do not repeatedly restart a unit where soot, odour or an abnormal exhaust condition is suspected.

Electrical supply and ignition sequence

Many modern gas water heaters need mains power or batteries for controls and ignition. If the screen never comes on or reboots when a tap opens, an electrical or controller issue may be involved. We ask whether the fault followed an interruption and which power arrangement the model uses. Electrical diagnosis and gas-side work may require different authorised skills.

Visible moisture below the heater

A drip can originate from a fitting, a water-side component or internal damage. Note if it happens continuously or only during use, without opening the cover. Continued operation with uncontrolled leakage or water near electronics can be unsafe. A competent inspection should identify the leak point and determine whether repair preserves the appliance’s safe function.

Ventilation and flue checks

Gas water heaters are installed in different approved configurations; some require particular clearances, ventilation and flue arrangements. If your household has enclosed a formerly open installation, disclose that change. Never cover grilles or redirect a flue to fix an ignition problem. Installation-related issues require the appropriate registered practitioner category.

Assessing an ageing heater

When an appliance has recurring failures, the decision is not automatically to replace it. We consider the model, prior repairs, condition and availability of manufacturer-approved safety parts. Where the exchanger is damaged or critical parts cannot be sourced, replacement may be safer and more economical. Any new unit must suit the actual demand and approved installation.

Send us the useful details

For an Amorosa enquiry, tell us which outlets are affected, whether water flow remains normal and what happens at startup. Include a phone number, model information and whether the installation is inside or outside. We can then discuss what assessment and service coverage is suitable before arranging a visit.

YOUR QUESTIONS

Questions about this repair

Does a low-flow tap prove the heater is broken?

Not on its own; some heaters require a minimum flow to activate.

Is a heater reboot always a gas-supply problem?

No. Electrical supply and controller faults can cause similar outward symptoms.

Should I remove the casing to trace a leak?

No. Describe the location and arrange competent inspection without disturbing the appliance.
