Gas geyser error codes and repeated lockouts
If your gas water heater displays an error code or shuts down after an ignition attempt, send the exact make, model and message so the fault can be investigated correctly.

What the water-heater symptoms mean
Error codes are useful only when interpreted for the exact appliance. The same number can mean different things on different brands, and some units use flashing lights rather than a screen. A code helps direct testing; it is not proof that a particular replacement part will solve the problem.
Write down the full message, not just a number
Some displays combine a code with a letter, symbol or flashing pattern. Include what happened just before it appeared, whether the hot tap was open and whether the appliance shut down. Where safe, a photograph of the intact control display and externally visible model label can prevent errors in identification.
Errors during initial ignition
A fault that appears before the burner lights may involve demand detection, permitted ventilation or the ignition sequence, depending on the unit. A clicking noise or fan start helps describe the stage reached. We do not treat every ignition code as a gas shortage, and we do not suggest adjusting regulators to clear it.
Errors after several minutes of hot water
A heater that initially provides stable hot water and then stops is different from one that never ignites. Temperature limits, water flow, combustion/exhaust conditions and sensors may be relevant. Tell us how long it ran and whether the same shutdown occurs at every outlet. Avoid repeatedly restarting a unit that may be protecting itself.
An error only after heavy rain or wind
Outdoor heater models and approved flue configurations have installation limits. Weather-dependent faults may require inspection of the permitted location, casing, airflow and exhaust arrangements. A makeshift enclosure or taped opening is not an appropriate way to override the protection system.
The display has gone completely blank
Some heaters need electricity or batteries for their control system, but the supply arrangement varies. Do not remove sealed covers or test live wiring without suitable competence. Let us know whether the unit is a plug-in, fixed-wired or battery-supplied model and whether the blank display appeared suddenly.
Repair should address the cause of the code
A code may indicate what condition the controller detected, not necessarily the failed component. Qualified testing may show a sensor, wiring, water-side or combustion-system fault. We assess the model-specific sequence and available parts before proposing repair; bypassing a limit switch to suppress the code is unacceptable.
When a lockout needs urgent attention
Gas smell, soot, possible flue leakage or signs of ill health require discontinuing use and seeking appropriate immediate assistance. Otherwise, include the full code, frequency, appliance label and property suburb with the service enquiry. We can determine next steps without implying that the code alone confirms a safe operating condition.
Answers before you book
Can you diagnose a fault from the error number only?
No. The exact model and conditions of failure must be checked.
Why does the error return after resetting?
The underlying fault or protection condition may still be present.
Should I bridge a faulty safety switch?
Never. A safety shutdown must not be bypassed.
