HOW WE CAN HELP

Assessing the fireplace controls and flame

Not every decorative gas fireplace is intended to provide significant room heating. A change from previously satisfactory heat output is a different enquiry from a fire that has always been mainly decorative. We first identify the type and rated purpose of the appliance before assuming that increasing the flame or changing a burner will improve it.

Check whether the model is decorative or heating-rated

Appliance manufacturers distinguish decorative-effect fires from units designed and rated for room heating. A beautiful flame does not guarantee a particular thermal output. Provide the exact model and what level of heat it previously delivered. Any discussion of suitability should be based on published specifications rather than the appearance of the flames.

The flame is much smaller than before

An unexpectedly reduced flame can indicate a control or combustion issue, but the fireplace may also be operating at a permitted lower setting. Report whether the remote indicates a heat level and whether the flame changes when normal user controls are used. Do not adjust the gas regulator or enlarge burner ports to increase output.

Warm air is not moving into the room

Some fireplaces include a fan, convection channels or vents. Others transfer heat differently. If a designed fan no longer runs, that may require electrical or control assessment. Blocked grilles or a changed surround can also affect the intended heat path; an authorised technician should check the complete installed configuration.

Heating performance changed after building alterations

A new enclosure, fitted cabinet or revised room layout may alter ventilation and clearances or restrict designed convection routes. Let us know if work was done near the fire. Do not remove glass or run the appliance with access panels open simply to increase perceived warmth.

Intermittent heat with repeated shutdowns

Heat falling away because the burner cuts out is different from steady operation at low output. A control or safety system may be interrupting combustion. Note the time to shutdown and whether the unit automatically restarts. Repeated lockouts must not be overridden; they can signal a problem beyond room comfort.

Assess repair value before buying components

A failed optional fan may be repairable on an otherwise sound heating-rated fire, while an unsuitable decorative model cannot be converted into a high-output heater by fitting improvised parts. We use model information, installation condition and authorised checks to determine what can reasonably be restored.

What information to include

Tell us the make, installation type, whether the fireplace has a fan and whether the flame seems normal or reduced. Explain if heating changed abruptly or never met expectations. A photograph of the intact fireplace and visible data plate, taken safely, may help identify the correct service route.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Answers before you book

Does every gas fireplace heat a room effectively?

No. Some are primarily decorative, and output depends on the rated model.

Can I remove the glass to feel more heat?

No. Protective glass may be essential to the approved combustion design.

Could a failed convection fan affect warmth?

Yes on models designed with fans, but it needs model-specific assessment.
