Gas oven ignition faults and burner shutdowns

An oven that clicks but never lights, ignites with difficulty or repeatedly goes out needs the correct diagnosis. Tell us whether it is a freestanding cooker or built-in gas oven.

HOW WE CAN HELP

Understanding the oven fault

An oven may use pilot ignition, spark ignition or an electronic sequence depending on its age and make. Each arrangement has different components and safety controls. We begin by identifying the appliance rather than recommending a universal igniter replacement or repeated lighting attempts.

The oven burner does not light at all

Record whether you can hear the normal ignition sequence, see a fault indicator or find that only the hob rings still work. A working hob does not prove the oven gas valve, flame detection or dedicated controls are healthy. We need the model and exact response to narrow the assessment.

The burner lights but drops out during preheating

Unexpected shutdown can relate to flame sensing, heating controls or a model-specific safety condition. If the oven locks out after an attempt, avoid repeated resets to force another flame. Note when the flame stops and whether it restarts automatically. That timeline helps determine whether control regulation or actual flame loss is involved.

The oven fails after electricity is interrupted

Some gas ovens depend on electricity for ignition, fan circulation or electronic safety systems. Others do not. Tell us whether your unit has a digital clock or powered controls and whether other functions returned after the outage. A technician can check the relevant electrical and gas subsystems without improvising power connections.

Unusual ignition delay or a sudden whoosh

Delayed ignition is not a harmless characteristic to ignore. Gas may accumulate before it catches, producing an abnormal ignition event. Turn the oven off and arrange appropriate qualified inspection. Do not attempt to make ignition faster by holding the valve open longer or introducing a naked flame into the cavity.

Controls that stick or do not turn off normally

A stiff selector, worn knob and valve that fails to close are different issues. If you cannot reliably stop fuel flow, treat it as a safety concern. Never force a gas valve or lubricate gas-control internals with a household product. Safe isolating and repair decisions must be made by an authorised practitioner.

Component compatibility matters

A spark electrode, ignition board, thermostat or flame sensor must match the appliance design. Similar parts from other cookers may not have the correct electrical ratings or safety approval. We consider the model identification and availability of correct parts before recommending repair rather than replacement.

What we need when you contact us

Explain whether the hob burners still function, whether the oven fan operates and whether the burner ever establishes a stable flame. Include the model label if safely visible. Report any smell of gas, soot or abnormal ignition immediately through suitable emergency or registered assistance, not a routine booking form.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Answers before you book

Can a faulty ignition board stop a gas oven heating?

Yes on some models, but the actual control sequence must be tested before replacing it.

Is a delayed whoosh normal?

No. Abnormal delayed ignition warrants discontinuing use and qualified assessment.

Should I bypass a faulty flame sensor?

Never. Flame protection is a safety function.
